Introducing monthly basketry courses!

Two years ago, some returning students asked if I would set up a regular basketry group so that they could expand their basketry skills.  So I did!  This is how I started my basketry learning over ten years ago - attending a course, once a month for a year - practicing in between sessions and gaining more knowledge each time.

In 2024 I started a regular basketry class aimed at beginners who wanted to learn the traditional craft of basketry.  Since then, two more groups formed , each meeting monthly to learn traditional and contemporary basketry skills.  Initially, the groups were intended to meet for 6 months - but they're still going strong - learning more and more skills and types of basketry.

Sign up for October 2026

I'm now taking bookings to start the next course in October 2026 - with sessions taking place on Sundays, 10am - 4pm in North Wootton near King's Lynn, Norfolk.

What's covered?

The sessions are designed for complete beginners but if you already have some weaving experience, you would be very welcome to join one of the existing groups who are now working at intermediate/advanced levels.

For each new group, the focus will be on round willow basketry.  Traditional and contemporary techniques are covered, starting with how to make a base.  You will learn the traditional English  underfoot method as well as a split stick base.  You will have the opportunity to learn a range of weaves, create a variety of shapes and sizes and learn different handles.

We will focus on how to control shape, combine different weaves and the fundamentals of designing a basket.  You will also learn about how to grow and prepare willow for weaving.
